YOUNG TIGERS PROGRAM

CONTEXT & BACKGROUND

As part of long-term monitoring Urban Tiger Conservation Project monitor wildlife to understand the potential of urban landscapes for the conservation of large carnivores including Tigers.  In the landscapes, people's land use and practices also lead to changes in the habitats of wildlife. This increases human-wildlife interactions and peri-urban landscapes become arenas of these encounters. Achieving a good coexistence between humans and wildlife in these urban and peri-urban landscapes is a new challenge for conservation managers and policymakers and communities living in these areas.

The project initiated Young Tigers Program to sensitize local communities targeting school students and Residential Welfare Associations on the forest-city/rural edges. The project aims to:

  1. To develop a detailed module for awareness and sensitization program for local community and young students on human-tiger interaction in urban landscape of Bhopal using field-based input.
  2. To raise awareness about human-tiger interaction and the importance of conservation.
  3. To foster community participation and collaboration in conservation activities.

    BHOPAL BUTTERFLY CORRIDOR PROJECT

BHOPAL BUTTERFLY CORRIDOR PROJECT aims to transform unused spaces in public schools into butterfly gardens while educating students about their vital role in nature. Through hands-on learning, students will explore butterfly life cycles, discover the importance of host plants, and identify nectar-producing species. They'll then be encouraged to plant these species at home, creating mini butterfly habitats in their own yards. Even small efforts at home will contribute to a butterfly corridor, connecting pockets of green spaces across the community. These gardens will not only provide sanctuary for butterflies but also attract a variety of other beneficial species, such as birds, bees, and insects, which are essential for pollination. This, in turn, will boost the production of fruits and vegetables. In urban areas, where natural pollinators are scarce, many gardeners must resort to hand-pollination, highlighting the need for projects like this to restore and support local ecosystems.

The program is an independent effort of Ms. Kriti Jain, one of our team members and passionate about butterflies and the environment. Recently, she was selected as a Youth Conservation Action Network (YouCAN) fellow.
